How To Efficiently Collect Clean Rainwater With Diverters

How To Efficiently Collect Clean Rainwater With DivertersThe traditional system of harvesting rainwater generally consists of a gutter attached to a roof that channels rainwater into a storage tanks. One innovation to this basic system is the downpipe diverter. This device functions by directing the first litres of dirty rainwater into a water chamber. This chamber normally holds about 8-15 litres of rainwater, although water butts can be setup to hold much more. The purpose of a rainwater diverter is to prevent undesirable debris entering your water tank. Keeping your gutters clean helps, but even so rainwater running down your roof still picks up bacteria, insects, lizards, bird or possum droppings and dirt. Rainwater diverters prevent these undesirables from entering into your tank. The first flush of rainwater containing many undesirables falls into the chamber (normally PVC piping). This chamber fills up with the several litres of rainwater and then the cleaner water starts flowing into your water tank. Some diverters have built-in filters that collect debris more effectively and prevent blockages. A special one that we provide is the Rain Harvesting First Flush Diverter. With this one, the first flush of water enters and fills up the chamber. As it fills up, a float ball rises to block any contaminated water escaping into your tank. Good rainwater diverters also allow excess water to be redirected back to the downpipe to avoid your tank overflowing. The best part of water diverters is that you can fit a drip irrigation system to the bottom to also water your garden, making them a very water efficient addition. Installing a good rainwater diverter is a smart decision. They help to keep your tank water cleaner while allowing you to collect rainwater more efficiently.
